SG was born and raised in Pireas, Greece. He attended Ionidios Protypos Scholi and entered the University of Athens School of Medicine in 1974. He did his graduate studies in Cell Biology at Yale and post-docked at Rockefeller University from 1980 to 1989. In 1990, he was recruited as a group-leader at EMBL, Heidelberg, where he stayed until mid-1996. He then returned to Greece obtaining an associate professorship at the University of Crete, School of Medicine. In 2003, he moved again, accepting a full professorship in the Univeristy of Ioannina, School of Medicine.
He is currently the director of the Biology Laboratory and a collaborating researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology-Biomedical Research, which is located in Ioannina.
Over the years, SG has collaborated with more than 80 graduate students, post-docs and technicians, many of who are now facullty or permanent personnel in various academic institutions.
He is the (lucky) spouse of Anastasia Politou and the (very proud) father of Loukia Georgatos-Politou, who is now doing her doctorate … in Heidelberg.
